Warm intro from Andrey Drobitko (#019)
Tell us your story
I’m from Siberia and I started working as a Digital Designer when I was in middle school. One of the reasons I needed to have a job was in order to have unlimited access to the Internet - it was around 2000 or something like that.
I graduated from University with a degree in Languages (there was nowhere to study Design or Art) and in 2008, I was invited to Moscow to work in Russia’s most famous design firms: Art. Lebedev Studio. A couple of years after that I joined Look At Media as an Art Director working on lots of commercial projects; a couple including Parking Douche even won at the Cannes Lions. This is still the only Golden Cannes Lion ever for a mobile app and it's mine.
It was at Look At Media where I met Brosi Golovnev, an iOS genius. In 2013 we created Glitché as a visual editor for the iPhone. We also established a company around the idea soon after without any financing to speak of. In 2015, Glitché was named one of The Webby Awards honourees in the “Experimental and Innovation” category along with a project by Google and some other big guys. Nowadays Glitché is used for music videos by the Gorillaz, advertising campaigns for Louis Vuitton and album covers by many other celebrities and brands as well as for the crypto-art by NFT enthusiasts.
Tell us a story that has really resonated with you
Damn I love Nintendo Switch!
I played Nintendo and Sega a lot in my childhood, but then I dropped out from gaming for like two decades and then BOOM!
The Legend of Zelda 'Breath of the Wild'.
I didn't know that games could do that.
I was totally into that.
The real metaverse before the metaverse.
What can't you stop thinking about?
I think that professionalism does not exist. We have to learn something new everyday, so how can we call ourselves professionals, if in reality we don’t know our subject well enough?
If I could tell you just one thing...
Trust yourself! Trust yourself but don’t be afraid to change. Some people are so scared of what other people think that they can’t post a salad on their Instagram.
Post this goddamn salad and start changing right now.
A little space for shout-outs
Nick Knight changed my life. He downloaded Glitché and started to use the app as his usual instrument. He created the cover art for Travis Scott’s 'Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight' album with Glitché, so we made history. Cool, huh?
If you could get a warm intro to anyone in the world, who would it be and why?
I loved Virgil Abloh, the founder of Off-White. We never met but we spoke over the phone once. He was very supportive and kind. It’s such a loss for the world. He had a lot of great ideas in many subjects. I like people who are talented in all areas. And if I could ask some questions it would’ve been guys from RTFKT. Amazing project!
